Image: City and East London Excellence Centre. This year the City and East London Excellence Centre hosted by Barts Health Trust, welcomed 30 students from local schools to inform them about a wide variety of careers on offer in the health sector.

The programme was offered as part of the Healthcare Works programme delivered by Barts Health Trust’s Public Health Team

Over three days participants took part in a number of exciting activities including:

  • demonstrations and career talks
  • the Brainbook workshop which gave students a chance to become neurosurgeons and learn about different specialties within neurosurgery
  • a visit to the helipad where students learnt about the trauma care provided by London’s Air Ambulance and The Royal London Hospital’s emergency and trauma services
  • resuscitation and clinical skills workshops
  • a hands on day at Medical Simulation Centre which gave the students the opportunity to experience what it is like to be in a real life scenario and utilised all the skills they have learned

The whole event was a great success and students truly enjoyed the engagement and provided lots of positive feedback with 100% expressing that the event has given them a better understanding of the work that is undertaken in the NHS.

We hope to see the participants joining our workforce in the future and providing the excellent care our patients deserve.
