Launch of the South Yorkshire Region Excellence Centre

Launch of the South Yorkshire Region Excellence CentreOver 80 healthcare employers and training providers (from across health and social care) attended the launch of the South Yorkshire Region Excellence Centre on Thursday 12 January 2017.

Our fantastic business admin teams (pictured below) were on-hand to ‘skilfully assist’ and ‘shepherd’ the delegates, and ensure the launch was also digital, with a high volume of ‘tweeting’! (#syrexctr)

The opening address was given by Candace Miller, Director, National Skills Academy for Health. There were formal presentations and workshops including an update summary and overview of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) and South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Local Workforce Action Board (SYB LWAB), from Kevan Taylor, Chief Executive, Sheffield Health and Social Care Foundation Trust and co-chair of the SYB LWAB, followed by an insight into the workforce challenges facing primary care and view of how the Excellence Centre would help to support this and future developments, from Ben Jackson, Chair, South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Primary Care Workforce Group.

The South Yorkshire Region Excellence Centre (SYREC) Workstreams

Underpinning themes

During our inaugural Delivery Group meeting, we have refined and agreed our underpinning themes and workstreams, as follows. These will be linked and supported through an additional workstream called The Hub, that is led by Ben Sewell.

  • Quality Assurance is at its heart and is reflected in our strategic aim – the intent is to ensure excellence for all, not just those organisations that have access to support and resources;
  • An intent to develop a universal language across the sector to ensure meaningful inclusivity and dialogue in how members work together;
  • A focus on hard to reach/hard to engage groups of staff/organisations. The SYREC is not there to reflect and duplicate other mainstream education and training activities that already take places across the South Yorkshire Region; there is clear intent on focusing on other sectors and staff who do not traditionally have access to this provision;
  • Partnerships with education and employers also runs through all of our workstreams to learn and share from best practice; and
  • Apprenticeships are the lifeblood of our Excellence Centre, running through all aspects of the programmes, with particular attention on maximising the Apprenticeship Levy.

Agreed workstreams - each headed up by a member of the Delivery Group and will include representation from each of the sectors:-

  • The Care Certificate (Workstream Lead - Brian Burke)
  • Specific care pathways across health and social care (Workstream Leads - Sue Sparks and Helen Thomas)
  • Primary Care transformation (Workstream Leads - Louise Berwick and Amy Collins)
  • Non-apprenticeship training (Workstream Lead - Karen Dickinson)
  • Future workforce (Workstream Lead - Linda Crofts)

In addition to these workstreams, SYREC will introduce Employer Events, to be held up to three times per year as well as an annual stakeholder event.
