Safeguarding children e-learning course

An authoritative introduction to Child Protection Awareness, this course develops knowledge of child abuse signs and indicators; explores what to do if concerns arise; and provides role specific guidance on good practice.


This course aims to make a positive contribution to the prevention of physical, mental and sexual abuse as well as to reduce the prevalance of neglect, in line with the current safeguarding agenda.

Different competency levels are presented, to suit the wide range of healthcare professionals.

These courses map to the Competency Framework described in the Intercollegiate document "Safeguarding Children and Young People: roles and competencies for health care staff".

Level 2 and 3 will soon include additional bespoke case studies relevant to primary care, acute care and paediatrics. Learners can select the relevant route through the eLearning material.

Level 1

  • Safeguarding Children

  • Primary Care – Recognition, Response & Record
  • Secondary Care – Recognition, Response & Record

Level 3

  • Introduction
  • Management of the sudden unexpected death of a child
  • Parental risk factors
  • Unexplained injuries
  • Disability and neglect
  • Fabricated and induced illness
  • Adolescent presenting with intoxication


Level 1: 30 mins approx
Level 2: 1 hour 30 mins approx
Level 3: 2 hour 30 mins approx

What will learners get out of it?

A better understanding of the signs of child abuse. Learners will also find out how to handle situations where there are suspicions of abuse – or when a child has confided in someone – as well as how to take appropriate action, depending on the learner’s role.

Who is this course for?

Level 1: All healthcare Staff
Level 2: Staff who have clinical contact with children
Level 3: Consultant and Career Grade Paediatrics


Self Assessments must be completed for each of the levels. Progress can be tracked by managers for internal audits and learners can keep a certificate of completion for CPD.

This course was developed by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health supported by other Royal Colleges and agencies including RGCP, RCN, CPHVA, and AMICUS, as well as the Department of Health and e-Learning for Healthcare.
